Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 157,000 in July, and the unemployment rate edged down  to 3.9 percent. This growth rate compares with 248,000 in June and 190,000 in July of 2017. Employment increased in professional and business services, in manufacturing, and in health care and social assistance.

February job growth soared to 313,000, highest rate since July 2016

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 313,000 in February (versus 200,000 expected), and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.1 percent. Employment rose in construction, retail trade, professional and business services, manufacturing, financial activities, and mining.

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was essentially unchanged at 1.4 million in February and accounted for 20.7 percent of the unemployed. Over the year, the number of long-term unemployed was down by 369,000.

The civilian labor force rose by 806,000 in February. The labor force participation rate increased by 0.3 percentage point over the month to 63.0 percent but changed little over the year.

In February, total employment, as measured by the household survey, rose by 785,000. The employment-population ratio increased by 0.3 percentage point to 60.4 percent in February, following 4 months of little change.

October job growth rebounded strongly from hurricanes, while unemployment sunk to a 17-year low

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 261,000 in October, which compares to just 18,000 in September and 124,000 during the same month of 2016.  The unemployment rate edged down to 4.1 percent, which is the lowest posted since December of 2000.  Employment in food services and drinking places increased sharply, mostly offsetting a decline in September that largely reflected the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. In October, job gains also occurred in professional and business services, manufacturing, and health care.

The labor force participation rate, at 62.9 percent, changed little in July and has shown little movement on net over the past year. The employment-population ratio (60.2 percent) was also little changed in July but is up by 0.4 percentage point over the year.

287,000 jobs created in June as unemployment rate rebounds to 4.9 percent

Some key takeaways:

• Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 287,000 in June, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.9 percent. Job growth occurred in leisure and hospitality, health care and social assistance, and financial activities. Employment also increased in information, mostly reflecting of workers from a strike.

• Both the labor force participation rate, at 62.7 percent, and the employment-population ratio, at 59.6 percent, changed little in June.

• The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) decreased by 587,000 to 5.8 million in June, offsetting an increase in May.

• In June, 1.8 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force, about unchanged from a year earlier. (The data are not seasonally adjusted.) These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey

• Among the marginally attached, there were 502,000 discouraged workers in June, down by 151,000 from a year earlier. (The data are not seasonally adjusted.) Discouraged workers are persons not currently looking for work because they believe no jobs are available for them. The remaining 1.3 million persons marginally attached to the labor force in June had not searched for work for reasons such as school attendance or family responsibilities.

Job growth bounced back strongly in October

Some great news on the U.S. economy today!

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is reporting that the U.S. added 271,000 jobs in October, far better than the 181,000 expected by economists. The overall unemployment rate inched lower to 5.0%, which is the lowest it’s been since February 2008, nearly eight years ago.

 
This, coupled with improvement in wages, makes today’s jobs report the best of 2015.
